Furniture Upholstery & Art Studio
Why make new things when there are already far too many things in the world? This thought had been running through my head for quite a few years. I myself had various pieces of furniture that I was attached to and that were already quite worn out.
Since July 2023, in addition to my profession as a visual artist and art teacher, I have also been a professional upholsterer.
Welcome to ZAAL29
The studio at ZAAL 29 is a large workshop where Sandra Hommen works on various projects in the fields of visual arts and upholstery. She meets various artists and visitors here in many ways, such as in workshops, open studio days, or by appointment. The old studio, the back room, has been demolished and replaced by an upholstery studio and a painting studio.
Students from the Maastricht Academy of Visual Arts make use of the facilities, as do secondary school pupils who are guided by Sandra in building a portfolio to apply for admission to an art program.
As a customer, you can count on a warm welcome with a delicious cup of coffee or tea, to then look together at the possibilities for reupholstering the new project or a new piece of artwork for your home.

Open studio days 2026
Atelier in beeld is the major open studio weekend for visual artists throughout Flanders and Brussels. It is an ideal moment for artists to open the doors of our studio, or for visitors to discover inspiring work in our unique studio. Mark May 2 and 3, 2026 in your calendar, because that is when the fifth edition takes place.
Our studio will be open from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the following artists will be showing their latest work:
