Designing and creating unique art

SANDRA HOMMEN

visual artist

According to Sandra Hommen, when she still painted only, making images was working out an illusion.

The viewer continually discovered new values and images caused by the fleeting, expressive brushwork and the many layers from which the paintings, drawings, and watercolors were built up.

Paintings from that time suggested new, undiscovered spaces.

Visual thinker

Over the years, Sandra developed into a visual thinker who was increasingly guided by her history and stories. The two-dimensional plane gave way to assemblages and installations, in which she plays with the latest digital techniques. Her work is now on display in museums and galleries.

So many stories

In 2019, I came into contact with Natascha Waeijen. She had come up with the idea "for a business card in the front row".

This is about fair practice for makers in the cultural sector.

This project was an opportunity for Sandra to reach out to the general public again. More than 165 cultural creators made a creative contribution the size of a business card to make a statement against the underpayment of artists.

The 'business cards' have been published in a book. This book is also for sale at Zaal29.

Sandra Hommen participated in the exhibition that opened on September 16, 2023, at the Museum of Contemporary Art De Domijnen in Sittard. This exhibition was once again given form and content by curators Arjen van Prooijen and Marjo Boesten.

The theme of the exhibition was 'Body Talk'. The exhibition became an invitation to the public to reacquaint themselves with the zeitgeist that displays old and new values side by side. The search for identity was naturally a part of this.

Following an open call, 45 artists were selected and were allowed to exhibit their work from 16 September 2023 to 14 January 2024.

The “Being Free” project aims to increase students’ awareness of the value of freedom and personal responsibility. In Limburg and the German border region, the conversation about freedom was conducted with students aged 12 to 18 in the form of theatre, art, freedom lectures, and debate, as part of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Limburg in 2019.

This project received the Provincial Education Prize in 2022.

Since then, every year Sandra organizes a project called *Vrij Zijn* together with her partner Dominique van der Borgh for the second-year students of Porta Mosana College Maastricht, in collaboration with the German Cemetery Ysselsteyn, the Overloon War Museum, and the American Cemetery Margraten.
